The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in social studies education for students who wish to obtain licensure to teach in middle school, junior high, or high school.
Students may choose to concentrate in any two (or more) of the following teaching areas:
Students gain teaching skills through classroom and multiple field experiences in the Bayh College of Education and the College of Arts and Science—and through their required student teaching experience. Field experiences begin as early as the junior year, with student teaching traditionally occurring during the senior year.
An important benefit is the program's flexibility, which allows students to complete studies in the disciplinary areas of their choice, while shared content courses and the interdisciplinary scope of the program enable students to obtain teaching licensure in four or more areas, if desired.
Relatively small class sizes enable students to work one-on-one with highly talented and dedicated faculty members.
Social studies education students are encouraged to consider the University's Honors Program and study abroad programs—which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries.
A number of activities and organizations are available that enable students to interact with other students and professionals, including the History Club, the Social Science Education Club—and Phi Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society in History.
The interdisciplinary scope of the Social Studies Education Program prepares students to effectively teach in middle school, junior high, and high school.
The program's integrated approach to social studies, which includes coursework in all recognized state licensure areas, prepares students for the challenges of diverse classrooms and lays the foundation for expanded licensure opportunities in the future.
