Campus Visit Questions

General Questions

Q: How do I register for a campus visit?
A: There are two main ways to find upcoming campus visit experiences: search by date or event. First, ensure you are on the correct registration page.

Q: What campus visit experiences are offered?
A: Personal Campus Visits: During the academic year, we offer four personal campus visit experiences - the Sycamore, the specialty Sycamore, the Blue, and the State-at-a-Glance. (During academic breaks, only State-at-a-Glance tours will be offered!)

  • The Sycamore Experience includes a meeting or presentation with an Admissions Counselor, a Campus Tour, a Residential Life Tour, a Financial Aid discussion, lunch, and a meeting with an Academic Advisor (depending on department availability). Please plan to be on campus for 4-5 hours.
  • The specialty Sycamore Experience offers the same events as the Sycamore Experience; however, they are offered for select majors when the academic department can only meet on specific days and times. Specialty Sycamore Experience majors include:
    • Athletic Training
    • Computer Science
    • Computer/Electronics Engineering Technology
    • Criminology
    • Education (Elementary or Special Education)
    • Nursing
  • The Blue Experience includes a meeting or presentation with an Admissions Counselor, a Campus Tour, and a Residential Life Tour. Please plan to be on campus for 2-3 hours.
  • The State at-a-Glance Tour includes a meeting or presentation with an Admissions Counselor and a student-guided campus tour. Plan to be on campus for 2 hours.

Group Campus Visits:
During the academic year, we offer three group campus visit experiences: the Junior/Senior, the Freshman/Sophomore, and the Elementary School/Middle School/Community Group Experience. (During academic breaks, group campus visits may not be offered or may be modified!)

  • The Junior/Senior Experience is available to all school groups that include at least one junior or senior high school student. During this visit, you will have the opportunity to tour Indiana State's campus, meet with a friendly Admissions Counselor, eat in the dining hall, and learn from current Indiana State students in a panel presentation (dependent upon time constraints). Please be prepared to spend approximately 3 hours on campus.
  • The Freshman/Sophomore Experience is available to all school groups that include only freshman or sophomore high school students. During this visit, you will have the opportunity to tour Indiana State's campus and meet with a friendly Admissions Counselor. Please be prepared to spend approximately 2 hours on campus.
  • The Elementary School/Middle School/Community Group Experience is available organizations of all ages! During this visit, you will have the opportunity to tour Indiana State's campus and meet with a friendly Admissions Counselor. Please be prepared to spend approximately 2 hours on campus.

Q: What is the difference between a personal campus visit and a group visit?
A: Personal campus visits are available for individual students and their families. Group visits are available for high school guidance counselors and community organization leaders to enable their students to experience and explore Indiana State University's campus. Individual students and their families are not encouraged to register for Group Visits.

Personal Campus Visit Questions

Q: I am trying to register for a Sycamore Experience, but I do not see my major of choice on the list. What should I do?
A: First, verify whether you are trying to register for one of our specialty Sycamore Experiences. Specialty Sycamore Experiences are offered for select majors when the academic department can only meet on specific days and times. Specialty Sycamore Experience majors include:

  • Athletic Training
  • Computer Science
  • Computer/Electronics Engineering Technology
  • Criminology
  • Education (Elementary or Special Education)
  • Nursing

You cannot register for one of the majors above on the regular Sycamore Experience registration forms. Please do not request to meet with these departments in the “Special Accommodations” box on the registration form. In order to meet with these departments, please find that specialty experience (e.g., Nursing Sycamore Experience) on the VisualZen Registration page. Specialty Sycamore Experiences are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Academic appointments are not offered for the following majors:

  • Exploratory Studies
  • Non-Preference
  • Liberal Studies
  • Undecided

Please select a major you would like to learn more about or indicate that you do not want an academic appointment in the “Special Accommodations” box on the registration form.

Q: What constitutes a Special Accommodation?
A: Special Accommodations include dietary requirements/restrictions or mobility requests. We will automatically make these accommodations and will notify you before your visit if it is something we cannot provide.
Special Accommodations do not include academic appointments or athletic recruitment appointments. If you request to meet with an academic or athletic department in the “Special Accommodations” box of the registration form, we do not guarantee that appointment will be arranged.

Q: The personal campus visit experience I want to attend is full. Is there a waiting list?
A: Personal campus visits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our office offers personalized visit experiences, so we cannot exceed the capacity of the event. We do not offer a waiting list, but in select cases, we will open additional slots to a visit experience. Those will also be offered online on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Q: I registered for a Sycamore Experience. Am I guaranteed an academic appointment with my department?
A: While we work very hard to ensure every student who registers for a Sycamore Experience receives an academic appointment with their department or a University College advisor, academic appointments are always arranged at the availability of the department.

Q: If I am registered for a Sycamore Experience and an academic appointment cannot be arranged, will I be notified?
A: We are in contact with the departments up to the day before your visit trying to arrange an academic appointment for you. If we cannot arrange an appointment, you will be notified the afternoon before your visit via email. If you wish to keep your arranged visit, your admissions counselor can provide a degree overview and class plan to give you basic information on your major.

Q: I am not registered for a Sycamore Experience, but I would like to meet with an academic department during my personal campus visit. What should I do?
A: For many majors, you are welcome to contact the department and request to meet with an academic advisor to learn more about your program of interest. However, some departments can only meet during their Specialty Sycamore Experience. These majors include:

  • Athletic Training
  • Computer Science
  • Computer/Electronics Engineering Technology
  • Criminology
  • Education (Elementary or Special Education)
  • Nursing

Requesting to meet with an academic department is not a special accommodation. If you request to meet with a department in the “Special Accommodations” box of the registration form, we cannot guarantee that appointment will be arranged.

Q: I would like to meet with an athletic department. How do I request to meet with a coach?
A: Unfortunately, we do not arrange athletic appointments. In order to be contacted by a coach, you must fill out the appropriate Recruitment Questionnaire on www.gosycamores.com. Requesting to meet with an athletic department is not a special accommodation. If you request to meet with an athletic department in the “Special Accommodations” box of the registration form, we cannot guarantee that appointment will be arranged.

Q: We can only come on the weekend. Do you offer any weekend experiences?
A: Our office offers select weekend group experiences. Unfortunately, because of limited spacing, we cannot host high school and community groups for these events. Our group weekend experiences are available for registration here:

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate individual weekend visits. If you cannot make it during one of our group experiences, please take advantage of our online resources:

Q: Where do I park for my campus visit?
A: You will park in the reserved guest parking lot next to the John W. Moore Welcome Center located on the east side of 5th Street at Chestnut Street. The address is 318 N. 6th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47809. We will provide you the necessary parking permit in the confirmation email you will receive at the time of registration. If reserved parking is full, you may use the West Visitor Parking Lot 9 across the street (between 4th and 5th Streets). Your parking will be validated.

Q: I did not receive a confirmation email or parking permit in my email.
A: There are a number of reasons you may not see your email.

  • Your confirmation email and parking permit are sent through our events registration system, VisualZen. First, please verify whether you have received an email from VisualZen. If you have, your confirmation and parking instructions should be inside.
  • Check all Spam or Junk folders. Because your parking permit is sent as an attachment, your settings may block the email from reaching your inbox.
  • If you still do not have your confirmation email, your registration may not have completed correctly. Please contact the Office of Admissions at 1-800-GO-TO-ISU or (812) 237-2121 to verify whether your registration was successful.

Q: Do you mail personal campus visit reminders and/or parking permits?
A: All personal campus visit communication is sent electronically or by phone. Please add VisualZen to your safe senders list to ensure you receive all communication from us.

Q: I do not have a printer/cannot print my parking permit or brought a different car than I registered.
A: Additional parking permits can be obtained at the front desk of the John W. Moore Welcome Center upon check-in.

Q: Will lunch be provided on my personal campus visit experience?
A: Lunch is provided free-of-charge with all our Sycamore Experience visits! Blue Experiences may request lunch, however, we may not be able to make that accommodation, depending on your itinerary. If we are able to provide that accommodation, your itinerary may be shortened or modified. Lunch is not included for State-at-a-Glance tours.
