Back to Alumni Mentors: Communication

I attended Indiana State University from 1986 to 1990 where I earned a Bachelor's of Science degree. I was a Communications major with a minor in English. I used these two subject areas to prepare me for the field of teaching secondary education. As a student at ISU, I was a member of Mortar Board, Kappa Delta Pi (Education Honor Society), and Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society). I was the recipient of the Alan C Rankin Distinguished Senior Award in 1990 and a member of the Celebrate ISU Steering committee. I worked for the ISU English department as a student assistant for 3 years. This allowed me to build great relationships with the English professors in the department. Being a student enrolled in the CAS prepared me for my job as a teacher because of the diverse curriculum that was offered. The faculty in the CAS worked closely with students and I felt that I was being educated as an individual and not just a part of a group of students or just a number. I always had professors and university staff that were wonderful mentors for me. There were required courses in speech communication, debate, multicultural literature, and writing courses at ISU which trained me to be efficient and effective in my job. Graduating from the CAS from ISU, I was prepared with the knowledge, skills set, and confidence to succeed

I have been an English teacher at Castle High School for the past 28 years. I teach AP English and Film Literature courses in addition to coaching volleyball and track.
