Music
Dr. Duncan, a native of Indiana, was raised and educated in Attica, Indiana. He holds BS and MS degrees in Music Education from Indiana State University where he served as a graduate assistant under the late George Graesch, Director of Bands. Upon graduation, he received the ISU Harold Bright Distinguished Service Band Award. Dr. Duncan began his career as a high school band director at the North Knox School Corporation near Vincennes, Indiana. Following 3 years at North Knox, Dr. Duncan became the Director of Bands at Southwestern High School in the Tippecanoe School Corporation. Through this position, he was appointed as the first band director at McCutcheon High School. His legacy at McCutcheon continues as he composed the school’s fight song.
He accepted a position as a graduate assistant at the Florida State University School of Music where he worked for the Director of the world famous Marching Chiefs, the largest collegiate marching band in the world (465 students). As he completed his degree program, he accepted the position as Assistant Director of Bands for Leon High School in Tallahassee. He became Assistant Director of the FSU Summer Music Camps, a position that led to his appointment as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of the FSU School of Music famous opera program. He received his PhD in 1990 in Educational Administration while at this post. He was appointed as the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the College of Music at FSU and also worked part-time for the Stubbs’ Music Center, a privately owned music studio in Tallahassee.
Currently, he is very active as a substitute teacher in area school corporations; the Vice President of the Attica Community Foundation; serves on the Advancement Board for the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana State University; served as past Chairman of the Administrative Council of the First United Methodist Church in Attica; and, teaches private music lessons to students in the area. He is a well-known music adjudicator for the Indiana State School Music Association.
