Dennis Ballard

Dennis Ballard has been a member of the music education faculty at ISU since 2003. Previous to his appointment, he taught instrumental and choral music in Missouri, Oregon, Arkansas, California and Indiana. He specializes in secondary instrumental music and teacher training.

Dr. Ballard received a Bachelor of Music Education degree form Pacific Union College in Angwin, California, a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Oregon, and a Doctor of Music Education degree from Indiana University. His areas of emphasis in the doctoral degree were college music teaching and instrumental conducting.

Ensembles that Dr. Ballard has conducted have performed extensively throughout the Western United States including Hawaii and Alaska. Additionally he has conducted ensembles traveling in Florida, the Bahamas and Japan. He has made appearances as clinician and guest conductor for instrumental and choral festivals in numerous Western and Midwestern states.

At ISU, Dr. Ballard serves as instrumental music education specialist, teaching methods courses, supervising student teachers, and conducting the Concert Band. Dr. Ballard’s research focuses on the relationships between rhythmic and tonal perception and performance and their applications to teaching and learning. His research has been presented at national and state conferences and published in national music education journals.
