Dr. Murphy received his B.A. from Loyola University in Chicago in and his M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Kent State University.

He is Director of Clinical Training and instructs Advanced Assessment and Treatment, Professional Clinical Psychology, and seminars in Forensic Psychology and Clinical Hypnosis. He has been active at the state and national level addressing legislation and public policy affecting professional psychology. He is strongly invested in training and practice of Clinical Psychology and holds a Diploma from the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has maintained an active clinical practice and provides forensic services.

Dr. Murphy has served on the boards and was president of the Indiana Psychological Association and the APA Division of Psychologist in Independent Practice. He also serves on the board as secretary of the Division of State Associations. He has served on the APA Council of Representatives, the Committee on Accreditation, and the APA Task Force on Envisioning, Identifying, and Accessing New Professional Roles and the Task Force on Distance Education in Professional Training. His research has focused on public policy, social interest in offender populations, professional training in psychology, and independent practice.
