As an artist, the human connection is fascinating.  When you walk into a museum, a lot of people find themselves gravitating toward the portraits of artists past, wondering how exactly they were able to paint someone like that.  It ranges from how the eyes probe at the viewer or how striking the color palette is, but no matter what, people attract...people.  Simple as that.

These pieces range from personal to fun depictions of people I have encountered in life one way or another.  Each of these pieces focuses on portraiture and redefining my technical skills when it comes to the human body.  Personally, I prefer painting over most 2D mediums because I believe I have more control of the elements that I use and that I am not limited when it comes to moving my hands around my projects.

All of these paintings come from throughout my college career and are my personal favorites.  My work is driven by form, contrast, and color, while putting as much detail in each subject as possible.  I am very much a detail-oriented person when it comes to my work so I spend a lot of time making sure every detail is right when it comes to either the shading of someone's cheek or the way light may bounce off something.  While beng extremely detail-oriented can make me frustrated when I work, I still believe it goes a long way.  Because of my education in the Indiana State Art program, I feel more equipped for the next phase of my artistic career.  As it is with many artists, I continue to improve and evolve with every project that I do.

Alexis Fortman will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with a 2D concentration.
