I feel as though there is this special power that comes with appreciating being alone.  Not necessarily being lonely--but those moments we all have where we find ourselves walking alone down the street or sitting at home alone on a Sunday afternoon.  Those times where we are left with ourselves.  Who are we when no one else is around?  Who are the people we know when they are by themselves?  With the work I have been making recently, I have set out to visually express these feelings of isolation, solitude, and quiet.

Within my work, there are hints at larger narratives that are unknown to the viewer.  The images leave you with more questions than answers.  Raising questions such as "Who is this person?" and "What are they thinking?"  Viewers can connect to the image because they have also felt those moments of getting lost in thought and being alone, but a sense of longing is created by what they do not know about the figure they are looking at.  While it may cause them to think about the life and thoughts of the subjects in the photographs, it may also make them think about their own hidden selves.  In our modern times, many of us may be alone more often than ever before.  With the rise of advanced technology, it becomes easier to separate oneself from the outside world.  Is it bad to be spending more time alone though?  What happens when you are left with yourself and your thoughts?  Does it make you genuinely more curious about others?  Does it make you more productive?  Does it make you sad?  I want my work to inspire self-reflection.

These are the questions I would like people to ask themselves.  Understanding ourselves is a good way to start to understand others.

Sarah Ahmer will be graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a 2D concentration.
