As an undergraduate student in one of our degree programs, you will be better prepared for a career in education. You will be provided extensive field experiences throughout the programs, beginning your first semester and continuing through your student teaching experience. From the first class, you take in our undergraduate program(s), you will:

• Be working with children either in a public school classroom, our early childhood center, or at a public agency
• Be provided with a full semester of professional experience before student teaching through our unique TOTAL (Teachers of Tomorrow Advancing Learning) program
• Receive a full semester of student teaching experience following the TOTAL semester
• Have the opportunity to personally experience another culture through international student teaching programs
• Begin working towards admission to the Becoming a Complete Professional (BCP) Program which is a critical benchmark for teacher candidates
• Have the opportunity to add additional areas to your initial teaching license through our pathway options

Elementary Education (B.S.)

The University offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) and a bachelor of science (B.S.) in elementary education. The Elementary Education Program prepares students to be general classroom teachers at the elementary grade levels. This program leads to a generalist teaching license at both the primary and intermediate elementary grades (K-6). Coursework includes professional education courses, along with Foundational Studies and additional subject matter.

Starting with a textbook and finishing with experiences in the classroom, Elementary Education Majors will learn about and experience firsthand what it’s like in the shoes of elementary school teachers. Special Education (B.S.)

The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in special education that prepares students for licensure at the preschool-12th grade levels in Indiana. Coursework includes professional education courses along with Foundational Studies. It is strongly recommended that students enroll in another education content area in addition to special education to increase marketability after graduation (for example, elementary education, math education, or science education).

The Teacher Preparation Program at Indiana State University is recognized throughout Indiana—and the nation—for the quality of its graduates. The program was established in 1865.

Indiana State University has earned national accreditation by demonstrating excellence in the areas of content and pedagogy, clinical experiences, selectivity, program impact, and capacity for continuous improvement. ISU’s Teacher Preparation Programs meets rigorous national standards for educator preparation set by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. CAEP is the only educator preparation accreditor recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

In addition, several programs have earned national recognition from the Specialized Professional Associations (SPA) indicating all respected standards have been met.
