Description

West Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (WCI-AHEC), in collaboration with Union and Regional Hospitals, will be hosting a trauma symposium for local first responders. The free program, focused on the District 7 region (Vermillion, Parke, Putnam, Vigo, Clay, Owen, Sullivan, and Greene), will address trauma-related topics relevant to law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel, including overdose, addiction, and scene preservation. “This Trauma Symposium is a wonderful opportunity for first responders to learn about all the trauma-related resources available in District 7 said Regional Hospital Trauma Medical Director, Dr. Chrstine Toevs. Skill-specific training will also be offered through hands-on stations on Spinal Precautions, Personal Protective Equipment, and Stop the Bleed. The District 7 Trauma Symposium will take place at the Landsbaum Center for Health Education on Union Hospital campus. Participants can choose from a morning (8 a.m. - Noon) and an afternoon option (1 p.m. - 5 p.m.) and should register in advance at bit.ly/TraumaSymposium. This is the third year the symposium has been offered and this year's event is being held in conjunction with EMS week. In recognition, Union and Regional Hospital will be providing lunch to first responders in the parking lot of the Professional Office Building that day. Union and Regional Hospitals have both been verified by the American College of Surgeons as Trauma Centers since 2017, offering services that allow community members experiencing trauma to be treated locally. West Central Indiana AHEC is proud to partner with our two local Trauma Centers to help to keep regional first responders up-to-date on the services available within our community and best practices for treating trauma-related patients. Sponsors of the event include Air Evac, IU Health Lifeline, TransCare Ambulance, Regional Hospital, and Union Hospital. WCI-AHEC serves 11 counties in West Central Indiana and has a mission of improving health by recruiting, educating, and retaining health care professionals in underserved communities.
