Most students are conscientious and strictly abide by the University’s . In order to clearly articulate the expectation for the Department of Social Work, this Code of Student Conduct has been prepared.
- All Social Work students are expected to maintain professional behavior which includes the highest standard of integrity and honesty.
- The National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics requires us to act honestly, responsibly and ethically.
- As such, the Department of Social Work expects students to abide by the University Standards Code of Student Conduct and Rights of Students Section III as well as the NASW Code of Ethics.
For the student’s benefit, we include the following examples of academic dishonesty:
Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to:
- Plagiarism - which includes, but is not limited to:
- Copying and pasting text from on-line media, such as encyclopedias or journal articles.
- Copying and pasting text from any web site.
- Transcribing text from any printed material, such as books, encyclopedias, newspapers, journal articles, magazines.
- Simply modifying text from any of the above sources without proper APA citations. This includes lifting portions of another source and using them as your own work.
- Replacing a few selected words using a Thesaurus.
- Using photographs, video or audio without permission or acknowledgment.
- Using another student’s work and claiming it as your own, even with permission. This is an act of collusion in which both students are plagiarizing.
- Acquiring work from commercial sources, including buying papers off the web or paying someone to do the work.
- Translation from one language to another without citations.
- Submitting an essay or paper that was written for another class/another purpose without consent of both instructors.
- Using your previous work in any way as a basis for new assignments without citing the original work in the bibliography.
- Cheating - which includes, but is not limited to:
- Looking at another student’s paper when taking tests.
- Using notes of any kind during a test unless specifically given permission to do so by the instructor.
- Working with others on individual take-home tests and individual projects/assignments unless specifically given permission to do so by the instructor.
- Fraud - which includes, but is not limited to:
- Providing false information on any academic document or record.
- Falsely documenting internship hours in the field.
- Doing work for another person
Any of the above examples is a basis for consequence and penalty.
Academic dishonesty is a serious academic offense that is not acceptable in the Department of Social Work nor at Indiana State University.
- All alleged incidents of student academic dishonesty will be brought before the Department Student Affairs Committee for review in accordance with the departmental due process procedures.
- It should be clear that any action made by the Department of Social Work's Student Affairs Committee does not preclude any other University hearing or action based on academic dishonesty.
- The individual faculty member will be asked to submit a written copy of the allegation and a recommendation to the Student Affairs Committee as to what penalty should be imposed.
- The Student Affairs Committee will meet with the student to review the case and a committee decision will be made as to the course of action.
- If the allegations are substantiated actions will include at a minimum
- a grade of zero for the assignment
- student will be immediately put on probation within the department.
- depending on the severity of the infraction, a student will be removed from the course and/or program of study.
- The Student Affairs Committee will use the form approved by the department to document the student name, the date of the meeting, nature of the allegation, findings, subsequent action/resolution and a copy of the contract with the student.
- This Student Affairs Committee’s report will be submitted to the department chair.
- In situations in which academic dishonesty has been substantiated, the department chair will inform the Associate Dean for Student and Community Relations in the College of Health and Human Services.
- It should be clear that any action made by the Department of Social Work’s Student Affairs Committee does not preclude any other University hearing or action based on academic dishonesty.
- A student has the right to an appeal using the due process procedures of the University. Refer to the Student Handbook for details.
