Recreational Therapy

The Recreation Therapist

  • is primarily prepared to work in treatment settings as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)
  • is part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team
  • assesses clients/patients
  • develops individualized treatment plans
  • addresses physical, psychological, and emotional well-being of clients
  • uses a variety of techniques including arts and crafts, play, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings
  • helps individuals reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; build confidence, socialize effectively
  • reduces or eliminates the effects of a wide range of illnesses, disabilities, secondary conditions
  • enables greater independence by helping clients/patients make a successful transition back to their community, work, families, homes
  • National Certification is offered through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification [1] (NCTRC).
