Chinonye Olumba - Excellence in Global Education: Special Recognition!
Chinonye is an undergraduate student from Nigeria, who is currently in her third year as a Chemistry major here at Indiana State University. As a junior, Chinonye has accomplished more than most and holds various leadership positions on campus. She became the elected treasurer of African Student Union, and holds this position proudly while also working as a Resident Assistant in Pickerl Hall and as a tutor at the Science Help Center. Her proudest accomplishment of the semester was being an active member of the team that organized last year’s “Yes Liberia!” charity dinner with her Executive board. Through her leadership as an RA she has helped guide new students on campus through transitioning from their lives in high school to their new lives as college students, while also forming bonds and creating new friendships with these students. With such a hectic schedule, Chinonye has still found time to take part in several different leadership development opportunities. Just last semester, she was one of the select few chosen to attend the International Student Leadership Development Program and she took part in the 2017 Black Women’s Summit. In both programs, she was given the opportunity to showcase her abilities and develop her skills as a leader. Though she may be a social butterfly on campus, life is not all fun and games for Chinonye. With her major, this “A” student hopes to one day attend medical school and then become a successful a doctor. Her vision is to contribute to the medical field and make an impact on people’s lives. Using the skills she has learned she “wants to one day assist people in [developing] countries” and make this world a healthier and better place. If she is not assisting those around her and working hard in school, Chinonye enjoys hanging out with her friends and watching Telemundo or Korean Dramas whenever she can. When asked, Chinonye described leadership as “standing out in whatever you do and being a role model for people to look up to” and she hopes to keep challenging herself in every aspect of her life while stepping outside her comfort zone.
