Global Gold-Leaf July 2018

Doris Santana Doris is a first year graduate student, studying Linguistics and getting her certification in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages). This half-Peruvian and half-Chilean graduate student has adjusted well to the Indiana State University community, and hopes to continue to do so as she heads into her second year. She has integrated herself into student life by joining several student organizations. She is currently the Organizer of She's the First at Indiana State University, the Public Relations Director of the International Student Leadership Council, and an active member of the Hispanic Latino Association. Through She's the First, Doris hopes to raise awareness of the current disadvantages girls in developing countries have when it comes to getting an education, and she hopes that with her organization they can work together to raise funds for these young girls. While in HLA, Doris was active in promoting Hispanic and Latino culture on campus bringing up issues that these communities face while living here, in the United States. She is not afraid to speak up about the issues regarding DACA and the "Dreamers" and worked with HLA to fight this injustice and others like this. While working as an ESL teaching assistant in the LLL department, Doris has presented at INTESOL (Indiana Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) in November and in May, she joined the third year of Leadershape (a leadership development program). Her vision for the future is to continue her passion in the education field and she hopes to encourage her future student to "have a voice" and to "not be afraid to support and encourage each other." With her schedule jam-packed with all these activities and responsibilities, Doris still finds time in her life to listen to music, dance, do karaoke and spend time with friends and family.
