Alternative Breaks

Alternative Break

Since ISU students first went to Jackson, Mississippi in 2004, for Alternative Spring Break (ASB), hundreds of Sycamores have participated in a variety of Alternative Break (AB) projects throughout the United States. Outreach efforts have included: working with youth, working with the elderly, environmental rehabilitation, wildlife rehabilitation, Gulf Coast clean-up, and minor home repair. Alternative Break is a student-driven national movement that creates opportunities for students to reach out to communities around the United States and internationally. It fosters a lifelong commitment to citizenship and community engagement. While participating in AB, students will gain knowledge, learn practical skills, and become more aware of the many social and environmental issues in the United States and around the globe.

The Division of University Engagement and Project Success are sponsoring a service-learning trip to Ireland in May 2024. Our community partner is the Irish Heritage School, an award winning organization that has worked within Irish Heritage Towns for years to help maximize the benefits of heritage for the local community. The location is Birr in County Offaly. Students will stay with local host families. The two week trip will leave May 13 or 14. In addition to completing service work in the community of Birr, we will take group excursions to Clonmacnoise and other medieval sites and a trip to the Wild Atlantic Way in the Burren including the Cliffs of Moher.  Additional information, including cost, will be available soon.  If you would like to receive more information, including information about scholarships and the ISU Advantage Experience Grant, please contact Stefanie.Knott@indstate.edu
