Goal 3 - Strategy 4

Increase, support, and recognize the community service of all members of the ISU family

Outstanding Service Award

The Center for Community Engagement annually presents the Outstanding Service Award to an individual that demonstrates exceptional character and integrity through sustained service to others. Dara Middleton, a staff member at Indiana State’s Cunningham Memorial Library, is the most recent recipient of the Outstanding Service Award. She is a longtime member of the Terre Haute Human Rights Day committee, a strong supporter of Indiana State’s American Democracy Project, and coordinator of the library’s youth outreach activities. Her engagement on and off campus has made a meaningful difference for the Indiana State and Terre Haute communities.

Contemporary Music Festival

Indiana State University’s Contemporary Music Festival is an annual event that brings internationally acclaimed composers and contemporary music performers to West-Central Indiana each fall. Residents of the surrounding communities, students and staff from local schools and universities, and festival-goers from across the country attend and participate in musical performances, educational activities, discussions, and social events focused on current trends in contemporary musical expression.

In 2018, a grant from Indiana State’s Center for Community Engagement funded a new festival outreach program. A guest vocalist and a trio of Indiana State music education students visited youth at the Ryves Community Center. The visit included a performance with interactive musical instruction, as well as, a question and answer session.

Alternative Break Program

The Alternative Break Program at Indiana State is a thriving example of community service without boundaries. Indiana State student, Ashley Morgan, participated in Alternative Break trips at the Marine Science Center in Florida, the Aikman Wildlife Adventure in Illinois, and the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. She summed up her experience with the program in this way:

“Growing up I attended several mission trips across the country. Alternative Breaks at ISU have expanded my reach to numerous locations throughout the nation during my first two years at Indiana State. The people and organizations we serve further my education outside of the classroom. They’ve literally helped me grow as a leader and person. I’ve met so many people and established some connections that will last a long time.” ~ Ashley Morgan, Indiana State student
