Assistant to the Vice President of Student Affairs

John joined the Indiana State University Division of Student Affairs in January of 2016 and will serve as Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Willie L. Banks, Jr. As Assistant to the Vice President, John’s responsibilities include assessment, development, communications, marketing, public relations, special projects and the Division of Student Affairs website.

As ISU alumni, John returns to Terre Haute after working in academic services for student athletes since 2007. His previous employment was as Academic Advisor for the University of Wisconsin football team. Prior to working at UW, John worked as Academic Advisor and Assistant Director of Compliance for Eligibility at Indiana University in Bloomington (2011-2014). While at IU, John advised the sports of Baseball, Softball and Water Polo. His compliance duties included certifying NCAA eligibility for all women’s sports. Additionally, John assisted tutoring services in the areas of hiring, scheduling, payroll, training and assessment.

John’s additional experience in academic services includes working as an Academic Counselor for Baseball, Softball and Golf at Georgia Tech (2010-2011). John has also worked as a Learning Specialist for Olympic sports at the University of Oklahoma (2009-2010) and the University of South Carolina (2007-2008).

Originally from Bloomington, Indiana, John’s own education includes a Bachelor of Science in history from Indiana State University and a Master of Education in adult learning and higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to pursuing a career in academic services, John worked in legislative services at the U.S. House of Representatives as Deputy Chief Clerk for the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight, as a legislative aide in Senate of the Indiana General Assembly and as an project analyst for contractors to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

John is a member of NASPA and ACPA. Previously, John was a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics and served on the Learning Concerns and Enhancement Committee. He also served as a liaison for Region III to the Life Skills Committee. While at IU, John served as athletics representative to the Bloomington Academic Advisory Committee. In his time as an academic service provider, John worked with 10 different men’s and women’s sports while mentoring over 300 individual students including 100 academic all-conference designees, thirteen Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, two academic player of the year award winners, a Senior CLASS award finalist and a Capitol One Academic All-American.

John resides in Terre Haute with his wife Susan, a native of Charleston, S.C. and a graduate of Indiana University’s School of Education. Susan is an early childhood educator in Terre Haute. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Tilly, in December of 2015. The Sares welcomed son, Craig, in June of 2017.
