Research Core (27 Credits)

Research Courses need to be planned considering...

  • An introductory statistics course must be part of your master degree or taken as a prerequisite as part of your PhD Program of Study prior to scheduling for COT 702 or COT 703. 
  • COT 702 and COT 703.
  • COT 710 and COT 711 are considered research courses.
  • Demonstration of Statistical Tools Proficiency is completed by one of two methods. The first method is by the combined GPA between COT 702 and COT 703. A minimum of 3.35 is required for demonstration of proficiency. If the minimum GPA has not been obtained, a two-part exam administered by the Program Director’s office must be passed with a minimum score of 70%. If necessary, this two-part exam is usually taken immediately after completing the second statistics course, COT 703.
  • Research courses and demonstration of proficiency must be completed prior to admission to candidacy.

     

PERIOD OF CONCENTRATED STUDY (DOCTORAL RESIDENCY) REQUIREMENT

A student working toward a doctoral degree must spend one calendar year in a period of concentrated study in which full-time is devoted to the degree objective. During this year, the student must complete a minimum of 18 hours of graduate credit. Two consecutive five-week summer sessions may satisfy this requirement. (Students must be enrolled in nine hours over the ten-week period.) Credit acquired during the first 32 hours of graduate study does not satisfy this requirement. Dissertation hours do not count toward the period of concentrated study requirement. It is suggested that COT 711 be included during the period of concentrated study.

  • All students in the Consortium PhD program are required to complete COT 710 and COT 711, Residency Seminar (COT 710 is one semester hour credit and COT 711 is two hours semester credits).

DISSERTATION / RESEARCH (18 CREDITS):

  • 2 conference/journal peer-reviewed paper publications relevant to the dissertation (first OR second author). Proof of research paper approval is needed before the graduation date.
  • Research hours (maximum of 3 hours) to partially meet the 18 hour requirement may be registered for during the semester the candidate sits for the Preliminary Exams.
     
  • Dissertation courses can be registered only after being admitted to candidacy.
     
  • The distribution of the 18 credits of dissertation / research are...
     
    • 9 credits from Indiana State University.
    • 9 credits from Home University, location of major advisor.

Note: Candidates must maintain continuous registration within the Consortium once advanced to candidacy and until graduation date.

RESEARCH / DISSERTATION & RESIDENCY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

COT 702: Advanced Technological Research Methods (3 hours)

Advanced methods of applied technological research applicable to industry, government agencies and social/industrial organizations. Methods will include simulation, modeling, experimental and quasi-experimental designs and use both qualitative and quantitative methodology. Statistical procedures using computer applications and software will be used to demonstrate principles of advanced research.

Prerequisite: ET 607 Introductory Graduate Research Methods.

COT 703: Advanced Statistical Analysis in Technology (3 hours)

Advanced approaches to statistical analysis are applied to problems in research. Factorial experiments, analysis of covariance, repeated measures and tests of other parameters. Includes sampling distributions, multiple correlation and regression. This is continuation of COT 702 and includes the interpretation of data as explored through statistical analysis.

Executive-style three and a half-day seminar plus on-line work focusing on professional development and technology management program orientation. Requires one face-to-face session during the semester. This session requires attendance on the Indiana State University campus.

Executive-style four and a half-day seminar plus on-line work focusing on professional development and research in technology management. Requires one face-to-face session during the semester. This session requires attendance on the Indiana State University campus. Prerequisite: COT 710.

Indiana State University Dissertation Credit (ISU)
COT 899: Dissertation (1 thru 9 hours)

Nine credits is required of all doctoral students who are admitted to candidacy. Offered by arrangement with the Chairperson of the Dissertation Committee. Registration must be for a total of 18 semester credits with 9 from Indiana State University and 9 from the Home Institution.

899 or its equivalent: Dissertation (1 thru 9 hours)

This is required for all doctoral students. Offered by arrangement with the chairperson of the dissertation committee. Registration must be a total of 18 semester credits with 9 from Indiana State University and 9 from the Home University or Consortium University of the Chair of the dissertation. Select the course identifier of the appropriate university for registration.
