Curricular Engagement Inventory
Indiana State University’s Curricular Engagement Inventory (CEI) is an annual review of community engagement and experiential learning practices within academic courses. The CEI helps to identify the type and intensity of these practices used by faculty across all disciplines of Indiana State University. We use this data to track the university’s progress toward meeting strategic initiatives and to generate information for the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The impact of our students learning and the resulting source of critical thinking and problem solving are significant to our community partners, environment, arts, culture, industry, schools, health care, and government.
Below is a list and explanation of the categories currently used in the Curricular Engagement Inventory:
A. Community Based Service Learning – Students provide community service during the term to meet the requirements of a course. This service is directly related to the learning objectives of the course.
B. Internship, Practicum, Clinical Experience, and Fieldwork – Intensive, discipline-based experiences. Students typically work with an organization between 8-40 hours per week.
C. Student Teaching – Supervised instructional experience. A culminating experience for education majors.
D. Consultation – Project-based experiences that require students to serve as consultants, providing a final product to the client.
E. Student Research – A mentored inquiry or investigation which demonstrates the full research process and requires a product, such as an undergraduate thesis or refereed paper.
F. Arts Performance/Exhibition – A mentored, self-directed creative project that culminates in an exhibition or performance open to the campus or community.
G. Laboratory/Studio – A course which provides students with practical laboratory investigations or studio work experiences.
H. Study Abroad - learning experiences that take place in another country.
I. SENCER - This is no longer a valid option as of Fall 2016
J. Writing Intensive – A writing intensive course requires students to produce and revise various forms of writing for different audiences. The course is characterized by interaction between the instructor and student during the writing process. Typically, drafts are submitted for feedback and then revised. A writing intensive course will require a minimum of 12 pages or 5,000 words of final drafts of written assignments.
