Community Engagement
Recently ranked nationally No. 1 in public service by The Washington Monthly, the Center for Community Engagement connects Indiana State University to the community. We coordinate and support opportunities for faculty and students to learn and serve with community partners throughout the Wabash Valley and beyond.
Our goals are to:
- Assist area nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private industry and business to develop links with Indiana State University students and faculty;
- Create out-of-class learning experiences, including internships and service-learning, for ISU's students and faculty; and
- Encourage and coordinate student, faculty, and employee volunteerism and service to the Wabash Valley.

Community Engagement Funding

The Center for Community Engagement coordinates and supports opportunities for faculty and departments to engage in community-based work through their service, teaching, and research. If you are interested in developing a community-based project, please contact Heather Miklozek. The activities we support include:
Community-Based Scholarship - The Center for Community Engagement supports faculty who are interested in scholarly and creative work completed in collaboration with a community partner and with the intended outcome of improving the public good. This support includes a variety of grant opportunities, as well as assistance with identifying appropriate external collaborators.

Community Service Leave - Most benefits eligible employees qualify for up to 15 hours of paid leave per fiscal year for volunteer activities during working hours. Chaperoning a child’s school trip, working a school or civic organization’s fundraiser, and volunteering at a non-profit organization, school, nursing home or hospital are just a few of the services for which leave can be granted. Community Service - The Center for Community Engagement helps external partners locate faculty with specific expertise to serve as consultants, board members, trainers, and fill other service roles. We also help students, faculty, and staff find volunteer opportunities.
Curricular Engagement Survey - Indiana State University’s Curricular Engagement Inventory (CEI) is an annual review of community engagement and experiential learning practices within academic courses. Click her for more information: Curricular Engagement Survey
Experiential Learning - The Center for Community Engagement assists faculty with the development of community-based courses and curriculum, including service learning and internships. In addition, we are available to help connect you and your students with community-partners in education, business and industry, government, and the nonprofit sector.

Volunteerism
There are many diverse opportunities for students to volunteer in the local community. Whether your interests are in the arts, literacy, youth development, the environment, sports, human services or faith-based organizations, the Center for Community Engagement will assist you in finding the right volunteer opportunity. The Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education (JCEHE) is an on-line, refereed journal concerned with exploring community engagement and community-based learning perspective, research, and practice.
The JCEHE publishes accounts of a range of research focusing on practical and theoretical insights and understanding, in higher education and across the disciplines and professions. There is a focus on case studies emphasizing community engagement and engaged learning practices, methodology, and pedagogy.
The JCEHE aims to establish and maintain a review of the literature of research and practice. It also provides a forum for dialogue on the methodological and epistemological issues, enabling different approaches to be subjected to critical reflection and analysis.
The JCEHE is edited and published by the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at Indiana State University (ISU) in conjunction with Indiana Campus Compact.
Call for Reviewers of Manuscripts
The Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education is currently seeking qualified individuals to serve as reviewers of manuscripts. Reviewers should be able to demonstrate background in and contributions to the fields of community based learning and higher education policy. Interested individuals should submit an email of interest and an abbreviated copy of their vita to:

Civic Leadership Minor
With a minor in civic leadership, you can become an active and engaged citizen who devises and implements responses to complex contemporary issues through grassroots activism and leadership in political, nonprofit, and business sectors. The program will challenge you both intellectually and experientially, giving you theoretical understanding while building your capacity for leadership in the community.
