Student Media

Students at Indiana State University engage in wide range of media-production activities. From their first days on campus until their last, students are involved in creating works for the student body, the campus and the community. Along the way, students get hands-on experience producing materials for a variety of media outlets, including a newspaper, yearbook, cable television channel, radio station, websites and a commercial video production unit. Students can participate in any of the programs without regard to their major or class rank. Students who are interested in any Student Media program can contact the individual manager or director, the executive director, or any of the student officers listed on our web pages.

Indiana Statesman Flag

At the Indiana Statesman, students produce a printed newspaper three days a week that is distributed free throughout campus and in the community. The Statesman also is available online at Students are involved in reporting, opinion writing, photography, editing, advertising sales, graphic design in news and advertising, circulation management and videography.

The Sycamore is Indiana State’s yearbook. This hardbound book is filled with glossy photos and short stories about campus life and ISU students, faculty and staff.  It is published each May and is available for print on demand or online at in Students work as writers, photographers, page designers, editors and marketing managers. WZIS, 90.7 FM, is the student-staffed radio station. It broadcasts popular music, news and public affairs, and sports to the Wabash Valley. At the station, students work as disc jockeys, sports announcers and commentators, news and public affairs reporters and hosts, station directors and managers, and in promotions, underwriting or audio production. Students also are involved in providing music for many campus activities.

WISU, 89.7 FM, is the public radio affiliate of WFYI-FM in Indianapolis. It provides National Public Radio and other local, state and national public affairs programming to west-central Indiana and east-central Illinois. WISU produces a weekly public affairs show, “All Things Wabash Valley,” which airs from 8-9 p.m. on Wednesdays. Students are engaged in creating and airing public affairs shows as producers, engineers and coordinators.

At Sycamore Video, students are involved in producing television shows that are cablecast on Channel 20 on the campus cable system and also online. Each week, the staff produces a news program and interview show, and short video pieces are created throughout the week. Students work behind the camera and microphone, as video reporters and television anchors, in video editing, as technicians in the television production studio, and as video production managers. Sycamore Video also sponsors the Video Expo, an annual production competition for students.

Syc Wizard

The Digital Team, Syc Creations, develops and maintains the six websites operated by Student Media units and works closely with all other media units to ensure timely online presentation for all media production. Most are incorporated under the portal Students are involved as multimedia specialists, graphic designers and webmasters.

Syc Creations is the newest member of the Student Media family. This unit produces client-driven, fee-based video productions, graphic design, and web development for customers on campus and in the community. Students are involved in pre-production planning and coordination, on-location shooting and recording, and video editing.

The Indiana State Sports Network produces live video for distribution on ESPN3 as part of an agreement with the Missouri Valley Conference. This year, we are producing shows featuring women’s volleyball, football, and men’s and women’s basketball. Students involved in the Indiana State Sports Network work as camera operators, producers, directors, graphics and replay operators, audio engineers, announcers, and production assistants.
