Program Description   Location: Our community partner is the Blackfriary Community Heritage and Archaeology Project in Trim, one of Ireland’s leading heritage towns. The Black Friary excavation site includes the 13th century remains of a Dominican friary, contemporary public art, and a community garden and orchard. Students will stay with local host families in Trim.
Service Activities: Service activities at the Black Friary site could include tending the community garden and orchard, assisting with upkeep of the facilities, and contributing to the conservation of the site. In addition, students will be engaged with community projects with local charity organizations in Trim. Examples of service activities include helping with educational events for children and visiting with elderly members of the local community for an oral history project.
About Trim: Trim is located in County Meath on the River Boyne. Trim is named for a 5th century monastery believed to have been founded by Saint Patrick. The town was an important medieval religious settlement and includes many important ruins, including a 12th century cathedral. The community is home to the restored Trim Castle which was built in 1173. The castle is the largest Norman castle in Europe. In modern times, the castle may be best known as the location where parts of the movie Braveheart were filmed.
Excursions: Group excursions include visits to Trim Castle, the Boyne Valley World Heritage Site (site includes prehistoric burial mounds that feature some of Europe’s most important examples of prehistoric, megalithic art), and a walking tour of Dublin that includes a visit to the Book of Kells at Trinity College Dublin.
