Applicant Eligibility

Applicants are required to apply to their program of interest before applying to the Porter Cancer Research Fellowship.  This will include indicating a faculty mentor and discussing research plans with that mentor.

The most competitive applicants will have a 3.5 GPA or higher at their most recent education level, GRE scores exceeding the 70th percentile, and prior research experience.

The fellowship is renewable for up to five years based upon annual review.  Each applicant will be required to submit an annual report.  This report must include a statement indicating interest in consideration for renewal and outlining how the corresponding criteria for renewal have been met.  Applicants who are seeking renewal and meet the criteria for renewal will receive priority for funding over new applicants.

Application Information

  1. Applications for the fellowship are evaluated on a yearly basis and are due by February 2 this year.  This deadline is regardless of semester of entry into a program at Indiana State University.  
     
  2. Applicants must also apply to their corresponding program of interest and meet all requirements for that program.   Students presently enrolled at Indiana State University applying to the fellowship program will be evaluated using criteria that takes into account their current year in the graduate program.  Similar criteria will be used for assessing fellowship renewals.
     
  3. Applicants must submit a 500 word statement of purpose that includes their career goals.
     
  4. Applicants must submit a statement of research interest that includes a plan for pursuing cancer research at Indiana State University.  This 1000 word statement must include an explanation regarding how the research will be integrated with The Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center.  It is preferable that this plan be discussed with the faculty mentor prior to submission.
     
  5. Applications that meet the requirements will be considered for a virtual interview to take place over zoom during the first week of February.
     
  6. Final offers are expected to be made to the successful applicant by February 15.  Applicants are expected to respond to the offer as quickly as possible and no later than April 15.
