Porter Fellowship

The Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center at Indiana State University (ISU) provides competitive fellowships to the best and brightest incoming graduate students who seek training in cancer-related research.  Since tackling a disease as complex as cancer requires a multidisciplinary effort, the Porter Fellowship invites applications from students intending to pursue graduate studies in any relevant ISU department, such as the Departments of Biology, Mathematics, or Computer Science.

The Porter Fellowship provides a competitive annual stipend of $20,000.00, with tuition and fees covered by the ISU College of Graduate and Professional Studies.  Porter Fellows are selected by a committee comprised of faculty with substantial expertise in both cancer-related research and grant review.  The competition for the Porter Fellowship is intense, with a maximum of five graduate fellowships being offered every year and prospective Fellows generally scoring above the 75th percentile in standardized tests such as the GREs.  Interested candidates must apply to and be admitted to their graduate program of interest in parallel with or prior to submitting their Porter Fellowship applications.  Fellowship applicants are also advised to find and discuss their research plans with a faculty mentor at ISU before applying.

The Fellowship is renewable annually (for up to five years) based upon significant documented progress in annual reviews.  Publication of original, peer-reviewed research is expected of Porter Fellows. Upon completion of their program, successful Porter Fellows will serve as both mentors and leading scientists in the fields of cancer-related research. Hence, both training in mentorship (by serving as teaching assistants for specific courses) and publication of original, peer-reviewed research is expected of Porter Fellows at ISU.
