WELCOME to the Indiana State University School of Music

Ted PiechocinskiIt’s hard to believe that the Fall 2022 semester is halfway gone. It has been an extremely busy and productive period for everyone in the School of Music. Our major ensembles have already performed at least once and the reception has been terrific. The Marching Sycamores have impressed everyone with their spirit, entertaining shows (the whole band doing the Thriller dance was great fun!), and they sound great. New ensemble directors Dr. Kathryn Spangler, Dr. Stephen Gage, and Jay Ellsmore have done tremendous work with their ensembles, and the students are ENGAGED and EXCITED!

At this writing, we are ready to open our 56th Annual Contemporary Music Festival. The slate of activities is full and, as always, a great asset to our students and community. With guest composers Stacy Garrop, CMF Composition Contest winner, Kyle Rivera and several other guest composers, we are excited to continue this tradition of celebrating that which is NEW and ear-opening for our students and community.

Our formal audition season is ready to begin with our first audition day on Monday, November 7th. We start this important season (with dates running into February) with our November 7th Music Career Day during which we invite prospective students and their parents to campus for an entire day of information and presentations about Indiana State University and the School of Music. This free event is a great way to see all that we offer and to meet many of our faculty and current students. If you wish, you can also audition on that same day, after our presentations. I highly encourage you (current high school juniors and seniors) to register (registration information is available on this page) to spend Monday, November 7th with us at ISU.

I invite you to CONNECT with us, one on one. Visit our faculty pages, see all that our talented faculty continue to accomplish in the world. Even more to the point, REACH OUT to us: email any of us, call us, or make any enquiry you’d like if something or someone piques your interests. If you’re interested in seeing if someone on our applied faculty is the “right” person for you, let us know and we’ll set up a private, free lesson with them. We don’t just talk about doing well…….we DO well. With music as the focal point of all we do, we also have many opportunities to do GOOD for our community, region, and state. What a combination, doing GOOD and doing it WELL. Come join us!

Finally, if there’s anything not covered in this website or in other materials available, please feel free to reach out to me personally at any time. I would love to meet with you and your family, either virtually or in person. We are the SYCAMORES and would to welcome you to our family. GO TREES!

Best regards,
