Derek JohnsonDerek Johnson is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator. As an electric guitarist Derek is active as a soloist and ensemble musician performing with new music groups and orchestras including Bang On A Can All-Stars, Evansville Philharmonic, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, New Music Detroit, Owensboro Symphony, Prism Saxophone Quartet and Partch, Present Music and St. Louis Symphony. Johnson is the director of Ensemble AMP, an amplified chamber group comprised of electric guitars and percussion. He has served as a faculty member in the music department of Columbia College Chicago, as an Associate Instructor of Composition at Indiana University’s Jacob School of Music, Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the Ball State University School of Music, and as chamber music faculty at the Bang On A Can Institute at MassMOCA and Moscow. Derek is also an avid transcriber and is currently working in collaboration with the innovative Swedish metal band Meshuggah on a series of note-for-note transcriptions of their complete discography and with Paul Simon on his most recent album “Seven Psalms”.
