Indiana State University – Faculty/Staff Administered Certificate Programs

Challenge Course Facilitator Level 1 Certification

This certification is administered by a qualified Association for Challenge Course Technology Trainer/Tester. The training is conducted by ISU faculty, staff, and current student facilitators. It is forty hours long and takes place at the ISU Sycamore Outdoor Center. The training culminates with a practical and written exam, resulting in a nationally and internationally recognized Level 1 Facilitator Certification. The training is a mix of didactic and hands-on learning, with direct participation on the challenge courses. These courses include high belayed elements and low-to-the-ground team building elements. Trainees also learn fun, group interaction oriented games. A challenge course program creates problem-based scenarios for individuals and groups of people to solve. It is a dynamic, intrapersonal and interpersonal process rich with learning opportunities, including skills related to trust, cooperation, conflict resolution and building confidence. Trainees will learn to provide these experiences to groups and safely and effectively facilitate an experiential learning process. Students that successfully complete the certification will be eligible for employment in the ISU Keystone Adventure Program. It is preferred that students have at least one year of on-campus study remaining so they can work in the program.
