Description
Virginia: 1799. It is around Christmas time, and the slaves are restless with the holiday spirit and the prospect for freedom in the new century. Julie, the white daughter of the plantation owner, has a complex and dangerous attraction to Jean, the house-servant slave. Miss Julie, in this new context, takes on added resonance, with the smoldering beat of African drums igniting into feverish drumming and dance, as the lovers provocatively transgress strict class and racial boundaries and then face the potential consequences.
This play is produced in collaboration with the Community School of the Arts and the Center for Global Engagement.
