Description

Dr. Ruth Fairbanks discusses how suffrage changed American women's citizenship but barriers based on race, immigration and motherhood remained. This is the first in a series of 5 Women's History Month events organized by Gender Studies in the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies. Monday 29th of March, from 9-9:50. For a long time, American women lacked their own relationship to their government. They had a derivative citizenship through their fathers and husbands. Listen to Dr. Ruth Fairbanks discuss how the suffrage movement began to change that and demand a citizenship of her own for American woman. It's a long and uneven story shaped by assumptions about gender, race, immigration, motherhood and the relationship between a nation and its citizens.
