An ISU Employee

I am one of the United Way "stories" - a part of the reason I am such a supportive United Way advocate. As difficult as it is sometimes to share, talk about and write about personal experiences, I feel it is necessary to spread the message of support. I have used several of the available agencies.

I have raised two of my grandchildren (siblings) for several years. One is a 20 year old ISU freshman and the other a 16 year old high school student. I've taken advantage of Big Brothers/Big Sisters - my grandson has never known his father and his big brother has shared his life for many years. He also receives counseling from the Hamilton Center. CODA provides emotional support for my granddaughter who was domestically abused. Catholic Charities helped my granddaughter relocate. The American Red Cross supported my daughter with four children who lost her home and all possessions in a fire. Meals on Wheels provides continuous support for an elderly relative.

• $5 will provide a book to a child who is learning to read
• $25 teaches one fourth grader what to do for choking, first aid for cuts and bruises, fire safety, rescue breathing, first aid for poisoning and how to get help in an emergency
• $50 will provide groceries for one week for a disaster victim<
• $75 will deliver one emergency message to a service member of local Armed Services
