Program Description: | The goal of this trip is to provide ISU nursing students with an opportunity to explore maternal and pediatric healthcare and cultural practices in Peru. Students will travel to Cusco, Peru and will experience opportunities to learn about professional nursing care in primary, community, and acute healthcare settings from a transcultural perspective. Students will have guided tours of hospitals in the public and private healthcare sector, engage in service learning opportunities at a children’s hospital, participate in an alternative medicine workshop, and attend classroom sessions to learn about rural and urban healthcare practices in Peru. Students will be immersed in cultural experiences at the ruins of Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu, will have guided tours of cultural and historical sites in and around Cusco, and will have the opportunity to participate in an ancient shaman ritual at an Andean religious site. This trip is designed to improve nursing students’ cultural competence and allow students to gain a deeper understanding of healthcare systems abroad. |
